FAQ about Physical Therapy

Q: What is a physical therapist?

A: Physical therapists are medical professionals with a bachelor's, master's, or doctoral degree in physical therapy. They work in a variety of inpatient and outpatient settings and treat patients of all ages with musculoskeletal injuries and illness. They treat functional impairments resulting from many forms of injuries and illnesses-from TMJ to sprained ankles and everything in between. Their goal is to return the patient to the highest possible level of function, relieve pain, and promote recovery.

Q: Is it OK to ask my doctor about physical therapy?

A: Absolutely. If you have a problem that you think can be helped with physical therapy, feel free to discuss it with them. After discussing with you the specific problem you present with, they can give you a better idea if it is something that is manageable with physical therapy. If he or she is not sure, they are welcome to contact us or you may inquire with us yourself

Q: Will my insurance cover physical therapy?

A: Although most insurance companies do cover physical therapy, what they cover specifically varies greatly. Please review our billing and insurance participation section on this website, and if you have additional questions regarding your specific insurance give us a call at 1-304-983-7766

Q: Who chooses where I go for treatment?

A: Oftentimes, your physician will give you a recommendation or a listing of physical therapists in your area. Sometimes your insurance company will guide you with regard to who is "in network" for your insurance plan. Ultimately, however, the decision as to where you receive your care is up to you. If you have a specific request, you need to let your physician or insurance company know. If we are not in network for your insurance company most plans have out-of-network benefits that will allow you your choice in physical therapy.

Q: Why should I choose to do physical therapy?

A: In therapy, the goals should be to resolve your problem, not just temporarily relieve it. Although medication and other forms of treatment can be helpful in relieving symptoms, physical therapy produces a long-term result. The physician may opt to utilize medication in conjunction with therapy depending on your diagnosis. Additionally, physical therapy unlike some other forms of treatment is not designed to go on as a maintenance program. Because we look to resolution, maintenance is not generally necessary.

Q: What if I have an increase in symptoms?

A: If you have increased symptoms please notify your therapist. We welcome open communication between the therapist and patient as we work as a team to help promote your health and recovery. It is very important that you communicate your symptoms to the therapist in order for your program to be customized to your particular condition and your particular response to treatment. Please notify your therapist of your response to treatment immediately. If you are not in the clinics but require advise regarding your response to treatment please call our office and your therapist will be happy to assist you. We request that you do not base your response to treatment on one particular session, but instead understand that your therapist may need to adjust your program as needed based on your response.
