Q: What is the HMR Weight Loss Program?
A: Health Management Resources™ (HMR®) has the most extensive published data of any ongoing treatment program and is offered by some of the most prestigious hospitals and medical centers in the country. Unlike many commercial programs, the HMR method does not rely on nutrition myths and fad diets. Our program is evidence-based and clinically proven. Since 1983, the HMR program has helped over 900,000 patients lose weight. Learn more.
Q: I have diabetes. Can I participate in this program?
A: Yes you can! We have helped several diabetic patients lose weight. The program option that would be best for you is a medically supervised plan. Not only can people with diabetes lose weight safely with this option, we can often discontinue diabetes medications as the weight comes down
Q: I've tried many other programs in the past. How is yours different?
A: In addition to the HMR Program being nationally recognized for outstanding results, we have an exceptional staff of caring, dedicated professionals who are passionate about helping our patients lose weight and keep it off while also improving their health. Our clinicians emulate the behaviors they ask of the patients, and they speak realistically about the behavioral changes that need to happen for successful weight loss and maintenance. Our clinicians work one on one and in group environments to provide personal attention and expert advice. Lastly, our Program offers a formal Maintenance option where weight loss patients can continue to attend classes and receive coaching and support from our expert staff in order to keep the weight off.
Q: Do you take insurance for the weight loss program?
A: No, we do not bill insurance directly. However, we do provide the documentation for our patients to seek reimbursement from their insurance carrier. We have found that most insurance will cover medical costs associated with weight loss but rarely do they pay for food.
Q: I travel for work and there is no way I can attend a weekly meeting. Can you still help me lose weight?
A: Absolutely! The HMR at Home® program is designed for people who cannot attend a regular weekly meeting in our clinic. With this program clients call a toll free number and attend their weekly class via conference call. With the flexible HMR at Home program you receive the structure and support of a clinic program, but can attend class from wherever you are. Or if you prefer to lose weight on your own, you may take advantage of our Diet Kits. Each kit provides you with the materials and meal replacements necessary for you to reach your weight loss goals.
Q: I have a few medical problems apart from my weight. Is your program right for me?
A: Yes, it is! We would likely recommend an in clinic, medically supervised option. Significant weight loss is often beneficial for chronic medical conditions such as hypertension, diabetes, heart disease, and hypercholesterolemia. Patients that complete the program are often able to reduce or even discontinue medications used to treat these conditions.
Q: I have many medical problems and am on multiple medications. Is your program right for me?
A: Yes, rest assured that you could safely lose weight with PRO Medical WM. Dr. Lynch, an Physician specialist, oversees our program. The presence of a medical director and availability of medically supervised program options make Pro Medical the best option in the area for clinically safe weight loss.
Q: I am concerned about regaining my weight. What is the long-term success of your program?
A: Our most successful weight loss patients usually become our most successful Maintenance patients. We have found that trying to keep weight off, without any sort of support, coaching or guidance, is very difficult. In an effort to continue our patient care beyond the weight loss phase, we offer a Maintenance program where our patients can continue to receive education, coaching, support, and accountability. As a matter of fact, HMR national data from the last 1000 maintenance patients from 28 HMR programs showed that 74.1% were keeping off an average of 58 pounds at an average of 2.5 years after their initial survey. That's 23% of their initial body weight being kept off. What's more, from that same study of 1000 Maintenance patients, total cholesterol levels, triglycerides, and blood pressure were all down as well. HMR is about health, not just weight loss.
Q: My whole family is overweight and we all struggle with weight loss. It seems to me that obesity is genetic. Is this true?
A: There is a genetic component to weight loss, as there is for most chronic diseases. Similarly, we often engage in the same behaviors and eat the same foods as our families making it difficult to differentiate between how much is genetic and how much is changeable. Making different choices about what you eat and do can have a dramatic effect on your weight and health. At PRO Medical WM, we teach you to lose weight and maintain a healthier weight using tools that can help you overcome this disadvantage.
Q: I've heard so much about the Atkin's and South Beach diets. Why should I choose the HMR diet over either of those?
A: Our programs are sustainable. The skills and behaviors you learn in our program can be taken away and used for the rest of your life. We stay away from fads and gimmicks and only focus on strategies that are proven to work. We deliver a balanced diet rather than an "all of this" or "none of that" approach. Most importantly, you will not go hungry while on this diet as we have a program philosophy that "MORE IS BETTER™!" Furthermore, we incorporate physical activity into all of our programs. Lastly, we offer a much higher level of support, accountability, structure and success (both long and short term). All in all, our diet programs will not only help you lose weight, they will also improve your health by providing you with the complete nutrition you need; your body will celebrate!
Q: What role does exercise play in your program?
A: In our program we have something called a Triple Imperative®; three things that you must do to be successful in losing and maintaining your weight with us. One of the imperatives is physical activity. The goal is to burn a minimum of 2000 calories per week. We use a simple chart to calculate calories burned based on body weight, duration and type of activity. Most of our patients walk.
Q: What is Physical Activity (PA)?
A: PA simply defined is moving your body through space. Almost anything you do that burns calories is PA. Examples are gardening, walking, stair climbing or cycling. Everyone can do PA.
Q: What's important about physical activity
A: Losing and maintaining body weight is a matter of balancing the amount of calories you consume with the amount you burn. PA constitutes a portion of the amount you burn. Apart from its basic function of having us burn calories to reduce or maintain body weight, PA has a bounty of other health benefits. Some of these include reduced risk of developing cancer, diabetes, hypertension, heart disease, improved psychological well-being and enhanced work and life performance.
